Chapter 3

Digital security for the family

Introduction

In today’s digital world, families are more connected than ever. From smartphones and tablets to smart TVs and online platforms, digital technologies have become an integral part of everyday life. While these tools offer many opportunities for communication, learning, and entertainment, they also expose families to a variety of risks.

Children and adults alike may encounter threats such as malware, data theft, online scams, and inappropriate content. Often, these risks are underestimated and/or completely unknown to most basic digital users, especially when if they believe that basic caution is enough to stay safe. However, digital security requires not only awareness but also practical knowledge and the use of appropriate tools. Today, the situation has radically changed because cybercriminals have a very powerful ally: Artificial Intelligence. This technology is used to automate attacks on an industrial scale and to create viruses capable of mutating their form autonomously whenever they encounter an obstacle. Current threats are no longer static, but dynamic and capable of learning how to bypass our home defences.

This chapter aims to provide families with clear and accessible guidance on how to protect themselves in the online environment.

To build a robust defence framework this chapter is organized into progressive sections that address both infrastructure security and digital awareness. The discussion opens with an examination of foundational technical defences, specifically focusing on the deployment of antivirus software and secure password management. It then addresses the vital issue of data protection, outlining how families can prevent unauthorized access to their private information, followed by an operational analysis of parental control configurations and the modern threats targeting younger users.

By the end of this chapter, readers will be able to adopt safer digital habits, recognize potential threats, and create a more secure online environment for all family members.
